Lightning Detection & Camera Trigger System
This project involved the development of a high-sensitivity lightning detection system designed to detect lightning events and instantly trigger a connected camera. The system was built around an ESP32-based embedded platform and required extensive research, signal conditioning design, and hardware optimization to reliably detect extremely fast electromagnetic events generated by lightning.
The primary engineering challenge was developing an analog front-end capable of detecting lightning signals while rejecting environmental noise. To address this, we designed a precision transimpedance amplifier stage with software-configurable gain, allowing the system to adapt to varying signal strengths and environmental conditions. Significant effort was invested in tuning the analog filtering and amplification stages to ensure reliable detection without false triggers.
The system integrates multiple hardware subsystems including:
ESP32 microcontroller platform for high-speed processing and system control
High-sensitivity analog front-end optimized for lightning signal detection
Software-configurable gain architecture enabling flexible signal amplification
Real-time trigger logic for fast response to lightning events
Camera trigger interface to capture lightning images at the precise moment of detection
Power management and battery monitoring circuitry for portable operation
USB interface and external connectivity for system configuration and updates
The hardware was designed as a compact 4-layer PCB, optimized for signal integrity, noise reduction, and reliable operation in electrically noisy outdoor environments.
In addition to hardware design, the project included extensive testing and research to fine-tune detection sensitivity, ensuring the system could reliably detect lightning events while minimizing false triggers from environmental interference.
The final design successfully passed CE certification, confirming compliance with electromagnetic compatibility and safety standards.
